What is StrongFirst

Updated: Jun 25, 2020

In simple terms StrongFirst is a school of strength. Let me elaborate.

It originally started when a former Russian army physical training instructor came to America. You might have heard of him, Pavel Tsatsuline, or just Pavel as he is commonly known. Pavel started with the RKC certification to teach a style of kettlebell training known as hard-

style.

Hard-style training focuses on using the kettlebell to build strength and explosive power, in contrast to sport style which focuses on efficiency and endurance. Think sprinters(hard style) and middle distance(sport style) runners as a rough comparison between the two.

One of the main principles that StrongFirst is built on is the concept of tension. Tension is the bodys ability to tense the muscles to gain stability and perform an action. This tension provides the body with a solid platform with which to build strength from. Imagine trying to push a car. First you must brace the body before pushing or flop on the car. This is an example of creating tension. Now use that same principle to to create tension before trying to lift something overhead, easier than having a loose and floppy body.

This concept of tension can be used for multiple types of training, whether it is the kettlebell, barbell or body weight.

Learning to create tension and combined with the technique of the tool and sound programming is used as the foundation of StrongFirst training.

I am a student of strength: This is about being open to learning and realising that we are not just here to "workout". There is a process involved in getting stronger, we must embrace this process and learn about ourselves. This is in stark contrast to many other gyms which rely on getting members to feel the burn and focus on a feeling of being worked out. You may progress for a short while but will soon burn out.

At Defiance we focus on getting members better. Better technique means less risk of injury, better also means being better able to understand the process and reasoning behind the training. This gives you more control over your training.

Come down and feel in control, not just the burn.
